When I lived near St Clair Station in York, taking the TTC down to the various options was a relative breeze. But now there are more options than ever. When I visit my in-laws looking out from the Go Train in Mississauga or Etobicoke, I wonder if that person across from me is on their baby journey.
How about that person over there?
Are you?
Whether you’re in Hamilton, Burlington, London, Windsor, Pickering, Kitchener, Vaughn or Sault Ste. Marie, far from your clinic or nearby, there are unique experiences that you have that others won’t. But you don’t have to do this any other way other than your way.

Keep taking your prenatal vitamin
It’s time to take your prenatal now if you aren’t already or as directed by your physician.
If you’re not getting pregnant or experienced pregnancy loss, don’t wait
If you’ve been able to get pregnant unassisted or you can even try unassisted (without medical intervention) then there’s so much you can do to boost your fertility. But if it’s not happening or you have had pregnancy loss. Please start with a referral by your family doctor or at a walk-in clinic to get a semen analysis and blood tests to get started early so that you’re not wasting time or extending heartbreak. Fertility is unfair and knowing answers earlier when it’s this important can make or break your timeline.
Some clinics allow self referral but also check with your employee benefits and insurance plan for what to do. You can also take the opportunity to see a naturopathic doctor (ND), too.
If you’re LGBQT+, don’t wait
There are more options than ever before and the donor conception journey such as choosing donor sperm can take longer and be more of a bumpy ride than you’d expected. You don’t have to do this alone either.
Background information on Ontario’s fertility landscape:
- The most options for fertility clinics in Canada, but that doesn’t mean any are perfect.
- Shorter wait times in clinics, especially for IVF in-vitro fertilization (IVF), than ever before because of 2024/2025 funding announcements.
- Donor conception is on the rise.
- Male factor infertility is the most common reason for IVF.
- Options can be overwhelming because there are so many choices.
- Fertility specialist Naturopathic Doctors, Acupuncturists and Chinese Medicine Doctors abound.
- There are new supports and peer support groups still going strong, like Oasis and Fertility Matters Canada.
- More people are still travelling to CNY or abroad for cheaper options and for sex selection.
Double check the Government of Ontario website
This website has information about the Ontario Fertility Program. There are other websites, even mine, that might not be updated as quickly. Procedures might be covered by OHIP but sometimes they are covered by OFP which is separate, which is all within this website.
Do your research & advocate for yourself
I wouldn’t choose the clinic closest to you and not look into any other. Choose one that specializes in your diagnosis, has the specific fertility doctor with the bedside manner you need, has in-house acupuncture, or whatever else is important to you. Take word of mouth, Reddit and Google Reviews with a lot of skepticism. Talk to a fertility coach who can provide some unbiased, objective insider information. ICF certified coaches like me who have been working around the globe for many years, acquire the information you’re looking for
There are also options outside of Ontario such as in CNY Fertility down in the USA, with Buffalo and Albany popular options. Many are opting to go abroad even farther to save on money, especially for embryo banking with diminished ovarian reserve or even for a hopeful one-and-done cycle.
